How to Purify Water in the Wilderness
Boiling:
Boil water for 1-3 minutes to kill harmful bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Allow it to cool before drinking.
Portable Water Filters:
Carry a portable filtration system or straw filter. These devices are effective at removing most bacteria and protozoa but may not remove all viruses.
Chemical Treatment:
Use iodine or chlorine dioxide tablets to purify water. Follow the instructions carefully, as these treatments require specific waiting times to be effective.
UV Light Purifiers:
Small, battery-powered devices that emit UV light can destroy bacteria, viruses, and protozoa in water within minutes.
Solar Still:
For survival situations, create a solar still to collect evaporated and condensed water. Dig a hole, place a container in the center, cover the hole with plastic, and let the sun do the work.
Important Tips:
Always source water from running streams rather than stagnant ponds.
Purify any water that looks cloudy or has particles by pre-filtering it through cloth or a bandana.
